Haemochromatosis Society of South Africa (HSSA) Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition which can cause the body to accumulate excess iron. Iron is vital to the efficient functioning of the body but excess iron can damage vital organs (eg the liver, the heart and kidneys).
Haemochromatosis is easily detected and easily treated if detected early. The problem is that the condition is, through ignorance, often not detected or is detected too late when organ damage is in evidence. This website has been provided to enable those who have an interest in Haemochromatosis (HH)(also spelt 'hemochromatosis'), ESPECIALLY IN SOUTH AFRICA to find information and support about this relatively unknown and often unrecognised condition. Those suffering from HH as well as their families, doctors and nurses will find useful information on this site. All are encouraged to become more actively involved in the objectives of the Society in support of the development of wider awareness of this genetic disorder. | | | Paul Geoffrey Bird | Frederick (Tom) Warder |
This website has been developed in memory of Paul Geoffrey Bird (1974-2000), who died from complications due to Juvenile Haemochromatosis in Port Elizabeth, 16 February 2000, aged 25; and in memory of Frederick (Tom) Warder, who died after years of illness due to HH, in South Africa on July 9, 1992. Marie Warder, a pioneer of Haemochromatosis awareness in South Africa, in Canada and internationally, is acknowledged for her efforts in establishing the Haemochromatosis Society here in South Africa. |
